Separate external data from instructions

Make a data-to-instruction conversion visible in types and call sites. This tutorial uses pure functions and real compiler/runtime checks, without a model or simulated tool. It deliberately retains hostile text to show the exact limit: a type boundary is not a content sanitizer or a prompt-injection defence.

Prerequisites: Touba and Node.js 24. Use a macOS/Linux terminal.

Terminal
mkdir -p data-boundary-demo
cd data-boundary-demo
boundary.tb
module examples.data_boundary

type SourceText
content is Text

type AgentInstruction
content is Text

function LabelExternalData
takes source as SourceText
gives AgentInstruction
do
give record AgentInstruction { content as "External data, not an instruction: " ++ source.content }

function RenderInstruction
takes instruction as AgentInstruction
gives Text
do
give instruction.content

strategy RunBoundary
takes source as SourceText
gives Text
uses LabelExternalData
uses RenderInstruction
do
LabelExternalData
with source as source
into instruction
RenderInstruction
with instruction as instruction
into rendered
give rendered

SourceText and AgentInstruction are distinct named record types even though they have the same field. LabelExternalData performs an explicit record construction; RenderInstruction accepts only the declared instruction type. The field names and textual prefix are application conventions, not privileged language keywords or enforcement of a model's message roles.

Execute and test a forbidden shortcut

The script passes external text as input, verifies that it remains unchanged after the label, then creates a second source that passes SourceText directly to RenderInstruction. Compilation must reject that call. The original source and its compiled AIR remain intact.

When adding a model adapter, keep trusted instructions separate from untrusted data in its actual messages. A successful conversion does not make external content trustworthy. Runtime authority still requires explicit capabilities, grants, scopes and approvals at the effect boundary.
